Q&A Session with Zuzanna Mucha

1. Could you please tell us about yourself?
I am Zuzanna Mucha and I’ve been with WOLFFKRAN for four years now. I worked in many different sectors before from owning a business to sales and customer service. I became an operator through apprenticeship program. I also hold slinger/signaller qualification which I achieved through the same scheme.

2. What made you want to become a tower crane operator?
I met other people who were crane operators at the time and as soon they told me what they do, something clicked in my head and I could not stop thinking about it. From that moment I would see cranes everywhere and couldn`t get it out of my head. I knew it was a male dominated environment and but was used to that, so it didn`t bother me at all. I immediately contacted WOLFFKRAN and applied for an apprenticeship.

3. Can you tell us about your role as a tower crane operator?
As a tower crane operator I am responsible for lifting and moving materials around a construction site as safely and efficiently as possible, and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the site specific lifting plan. Carrying out basic maintenance duties, including inspections and pre and post start functions checks.

4. What is it about the job that you like so much?
Breath-taking views! The fact that I am taking a part in building one of the greatest cities in the world, London! In addition, that everybody admires me for what I do!

5. What was your proudest moment at work?
I think every time and every day when people working in the construction site are going home safe at the end of the day is the moment to be proud of especially operating such a heavy and potentially danger machine. There was a nice moment when I was awarded as safest worker by Kier or when I could represent WOLFFKRAN at trade fairs.

6. How do you think women can contribute to the construction industry?
Women have a lot to offer to the construction industry. They are more dedicated. I know there are women in construction not only as designers, architects, engineers but girls on the tools and it`s great. I wish there were more women in industry. Women are simply role models, if they decide to work in jobs within construction then there is a passion behind their work and they will give 120%. We need more women in construction because they can calm the site atmosphere, I see this!

7. Tell us about the most exciting project you have been involved on.
To me every project is exciting to work on, even if it is just building an apartment block.

8. How has working at WOLFFKRAN influenced your career?
I am grateful to WOLFFKRAN, I have been given a chance and opportunity which I took without a moments hesitation. Now I am able to do, what I really want to do.

9. How could we encourage more women to work in the construction industry?
I think by doing these kind of interviews so they can see and get an idea what it is like.

10. What would you say to other women who were considering starting a career in the construction industry?
If I can do it, you can do it! If you think about working in construction just go for it. There is lots of support for you and it is not as difficult as you probably imagine.
